Chill in a funky beach town

A beach town on the southern end of the Nicoya Peninsula, Montezuma is a charming little place tucked into the folds of overgrown hills.

The coastline here is convoluted, jutting out into the sea and doubling back on itself. Walk a few hundred meters and you're out of town; walk 10 minutes and you'll find beaches where you'll have the place to yourself except for the occasional pelican, iguana, or troop of monkeys.

The jungle rushes right up to the edge of the beach, where brown sand alternates with volcanic rock and pulverized pink and white shells. Rivers and streams cascade over boulders and empty out into deserted coves.

The influx of mostly young North Americans and Europeans has made Montezuma a cool little "alternative" spot, with excellent vegetarian food, organic ice cream, and a couple of bars that pump out dance music deep into the tropical night. One of the town's nicknames is "Montefuma" for all the herb that gets burned here ("fuma" means "smoke" in Spanish).

Eleven kilometers (8 miles) to the south, at the tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, you’ll find lovely Cabo Blanco Nature Preserve, Costa Rica’s first national park.

There are at least two good yoga studios/retreats in town: Montezuma Yoga and
Anamaya Resort.

People do surf here but by all accounts the waves are better on the other side of the peninsula, in Mal Pais/Santa Teresa.

The town organizes a small international film festival every Fall.
