Costa Rica's main airport is in Alajuela, 16 kilometers (10 miles) northwest of downtown San José. The airport occupies an attractive glass-and-steel terminal with fast food options, wireless Internet access, TVs, gift shops, and a money-change counter.
After your plane arrives, you'll go through customs and immigration. As you exit the airport, you'll see a little booth where you can buy a taxi ticket to wherever you need to go, paying in dollars if you like. A taxi ride from the airport to downtown San José costs from US$15 to $20.
Getting to the airport from the San José area is a matter of hailing or calling a cab, or Leaving by air, travelers pay a US$26 exit tax
